Mapping with Open Street Map

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I was recently introduced to Open Street Map – an open, community based (read “wiki style”), mapping project, that has the potential to be a Google Maps on steroids!

What gives this project the ‘edge’ over something like Google Maps is the fact that it is built based on community contribution. If a road or street in your area is not currently mapped, all you need is a GPS and you can map it yourself, and upload the data – it’s as simple as that. Cant find your favourite restaurant… Add it – and then share it with your friends.

The power of this project (as with most other open projects) is in its community. Anyone in the community can contribute, and its dead simple.

One of the main reasons I have started contributing to the project (by updating street names, adding places of interest, etc), is that I can see it may be a very useful resource when it comes to my book. The inclusion of maps within my book was something I was a little concerned about. I know Google Maps data is heavily licensed (read “expensive”) by the companies that provide it to Google.

Open Street Maps is licensed under creative commons meaning that it is typically free to use, providing you attribute the project as the source of the data. By updating their maps and becoming part of the community, I also feel that I am giving back a little to the project.

I have also installed the OSM (Open Street Maps) WordPress plugin into my blog so I can use it in future to present maps that relate to what I am writing about.

Lucas & Laura’s 1st wedding anniversary

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Well, the last year has gone quickly – it only seems like a few months ago that we were getting ready for our wedding, and to head off overseas for 4 months. It’s been quite an exciting and busy year, so we decided to take a few days out and headed down to Hobart for a few days to relax and celebrate our first year of married life.

The slower pace of Hobart (and I guess Tasmania in general) was great for a few relaxed days away. We hired a car so we could get out and see a bit more of the country side. We got up to Coles Bay and Feycinet National Park. We experienced the spine tingling ghost tour at Port Author, and spent a bit of time in Richmond, the Cadbury chocolate factory and the Cascade Brewery. Mount Wellington was covered in cloud, so our slow drive up there didn’t really yield the spectacular views that you could imagine on a clear day.

All in all we had a great couple of days on the smaller island. We have posted our photos in our photo album.

Home time

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

We made it back to Bangkok from Phuket, and are ready to board our flight back home to Australia! It’s hard to believe that after 4 months it’s finaly home time… It had to happen, and we are both ready for it.

I think our flight is about 8 or 9 hours to Sydney, where we get a domestic back to Melbourne – and onto the final stage of our trip, Bairnsdale.

Anyway, we will see you all soon. It shouldn’t be too hard to spot us – we are the ones with the lovely European tans!

Time out in Thailand

IMG_8894.JPG After a long flight (11 hours) from London, we touched down in Bangkok, collected our bags, and exited the airport to our awaiting hotel transfer.

On exiting the airport, you immediately notice the humidity (it’s not as if its hiding!) – this place is hot and humid, luckily the south of Italy at this time of the year is also pretty humid and hot at times, so we have been fairly well acclimatised over the past weeks.

We were driven to our hotel and checked in – where we were greeted by my Mum (she is on her way over to England and Italy for 2 months).

It was really great to see a familiar face after 4 long months traveling, and it was really good to see Mum.

We only had a few hours together as Mum was flying out only hours after we arrived – but we managed to fit in a quick market wander, dinner and a chat before we had to say goodbye again.

The following morning we checked out of our Bangkok hotel, headed back to the airport to catch a local flight to Phuket.

IMG_8906.JPG We are staying in a Resort in Patong Beach, only about 20 min from Phuket town. The resort is absolutely beautiful, and has all you could want.

In our time here we have mastered the art of spending Bhart! Its actually quite simple… A massage here, some beautiful Thai food there, a few drinks bye the pool, a few tailored suits, and various nick-nacks from the street merchants… In know time at all you have drained your wallet and need to replenish the supplies from the magic hole in the wall.

We can really recommend a Thai massage, especially after 4 long months of back packing around the world – Nothing like the burn of Tiger Balm to ease those aching mussels. IMG_9060.JPG

After a few meals in the Resorts restaurant, we woke up and found the much better, and much cheaper eateries in the street (not street vendors – these are proper food establishments). In the resort, each dish would cost about 300 – 600 Bhat. Down the street you can get Pad Thai noodles for 70-80 Bhat. For 300 Bhat (about $10) we got Pad Thai, Basil Chicken, Pepper & Ginger Crab, a large beer and a coke – and could not eat another thing!

Anyway… we have seen the last of this for a while now. We check out tomorrow morning to head for home – so I guess we could say “The honeymoon is over”.
